El Tros
A small retreat, a life beyond its walls.
One of a kindThey could not enlarge the house, so they made room outside.
Upcoming videoAmong olive trees on the Tarragona coast, a former agricultural tool shed has become a holiday retreat for a family of five. The enclosed house is just 25 square metres, but family life continues through the surrounding landscape.
Cécile Carré takes us through El Tros, the retreat she created with Bruno Conigliano. Unable to enlarge the building, they organised cooking, eating, washing and resting around it, with shade for summer and a compact refuge for winter.
Built-in outdoor furniture makes arriving and leaving easier. A table brings the family together, a shower opens to the trees, and paths invite them to walk barefoot. Inside, a generous sofa, a sleeping loft and a low kitchen make the small space useful without making every activity feel small.
Local craftspeople and handmade tiles connect the retreat to its surroundings. As the children grow, tents offer more private sleeping space while the shared places keep everyone together. Our upcoming video follows Cécile through these decisions and the family life they make possible.
